Fretted instrument maintenance and repair servicing the Connecticut area
Our Story
Our Story
Like many guitar players, I found the basic wear and tear of my instruments to be one of the challenges that needed to be addressed regularly. I started playing in 1979 and ever since I picked up that first axe I wanted to know how it worked and what made it play and sound better. I spent a lot of time ripping my old guitars apart and rebuilding them. When I started playing steady gigs I learned quickly about the need to keep up with proper maintenance plus how to remedy the unexpected damages that can occur from extensive playing and being in the "elements". Then there were the wiring issues, broken pots/switches and... well you know! With years of experience of doing my own work I decided to study the luthier craft with John LeVan in Nashville to be sure I had the proper techniques and tools to start offering repair and maintenance services professionally.

These before and after pictures of a Fender DG-8S shows what a bit of TLC can do from my shop! With a new pick guard, new intonated bone saddle and a whole lot of "scrubbing" plus a basic set up to the neck it came out playing and looking brand new!
Fret wear is inevitable - This photo shows 10 years of steady gigging on a Gibson J45. This type of wear can cause all kinds of issues such as fret buzz and intonation problems. Luckily there was still plenty of "meat" on the frets so the task of levelling and crowning begins...
And the end result looks and plays fantastic! The nut slots were filed slightly to compensate for the lower fret profile, plus this guitar needed a new saddle to alleviate constant string breakage due to the gouges that formed over the years. Now it is back on the road for many more years of great performances.
